DID YOU KNOW?
Darakht-e Danesh means “knowledge tree” in Dari, one of the official languages of Afghanistan.
The library provides free and open educational resources.
Sign up to receive the library’s quarterly newsletter, published in Dari, Pashto and English.
The Library currently houses nearly 6,000 resources in almost 130 subjects, for both primary and secondary teachers, in nine languages.
The Darakht-e Danesh Library provides Free and Open Educational Resources for Afghanistan. The Library is a digital repository of open educational resources (OERs) for teachers, students, and anyone with a curious mind who wants to learn more on a particular subject.
Since August, CW4WAfghan been working to expand virtual education opportunities so that women and girls cut off from their conventional education in Afghanistan can still access learning opportunities.
We are pleased to be adding a third tool to our suite of platforms enabling virtual education in Afghanistan, DD Classroom. DD Library gives access to learning materials including books, storybooks, lesson plans, videos, experiments, games and more in nine languages. DD Courses allows people to take full courses at their own pace on a variety of subjects, asynchronously, from any location. And now, DD Classroom provides a means of synchronous learning by enabling live video classes.

The library’s learning materials offer extensive resources for Afghans in Afghanistan or outside the country to develop their knowledge on a subject, as well as general information on a range of subjects.
The Library was created to increase access to quality, locally adapted educational resources, to encourage individuals and teachers to consult a wide variety of information sources in their practice, and to support teachers to adapt, create and share their own resources with other educators.
HOW CAN I HELP?
As we build our online resources, we invite you to participate.
This form is for individuals to express interest to help deliver education materials. Our Distance Education Coordinator will be building this part of the program, working with volunteers to deliver more education opportunities.
We believe digitalization can make more out of less and nurture independent learning and professional development techniques.
An offline version of the Library, DDL Lite, runs in institutions across Afghanistan, including teacher colleges, schools, and at the Ministry of Education.
Internet Packages
To ensure that girls and women can access these virtual learning environments, we are working in partnership with local organizations to provide Internet packages enabling students to connect from home. A full month of home Internet costs only CAD$5.
Income Assistance
We are also exploring how our programs can provide income assistance to Afghan women who lost their jobs since August, for example, by employing them as teachers on our virtual platforms.
Grant Programs
Additionally, the Networked Improvement Communities (NIC) for School Leaders Towards Equity and Inclusion Project, working with school leaders and educators from Afghanistan, continues, in partnership with the Open University, the International Development Research Centre, FIT-ED and other partners. Our grants program will continue to support partner projects that deliver on our mandate, such as storybook development, printing and distribution.
