Taliban Return: Implications for Women’s Rights and Global Security

Friday, March 26 from 12:30 – 2:00 pm ET

The fate of Afghan women is a barometer for women elsewhere. As intra-Afghan peace talks proceed, the threat grows of grave compromise on women’s rights. This panel features world renowned experts and activists who will speak to the global foreign policy effects of protecting the rights women have achieved from fundamentalisms, including what the legitimization of Taliban ideology means for women in other Muslim-majority countries, the security consequences for other states of empowering the Taliban, and how concessions to the Taliban will encourage other Islamist militant groups seeking to reverse women’s rights, such as Al Shabab, Boko Haram and ISIS.
